FAQ ON THE MSC ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR DECK CADETS 2008
What is the selection Process ?
STEP 1
- Apply with your details on and fill in the particulars required.
- Select the centre from which you wish to appear for the entrance exam.
- You will get a confirmation of your application.
- Appear for the MSC deck entrance examination at the city of your choice -

- Interviews will be held immediately after the written exams.
- All successful candidates will be notified by mail/telephone
STEP 2
- Successful candidates will be called to any one of our centres for completing their medical tests through our Company doctor.(Medical tests are only to be done as per DGS Medical Examination Rules 2000 by a DG Shipping approved Company Doctor).
- Medical fees is Rs 2000 payable by candidate
STEP 3
- Obtain form for OPENNET - DG Shipping entrance exam (last date :27th May 2008)this is a Govt of India requirement. We will guide in the filling/submission of the form.
- OPENNET exam fee is Rs 600 payable by candidate
- Appear for OPENNET (on 15th June 2008)
- Results will be declared by 23th June 2008)
STEP 4
- If you pass, we will call you for appearing for your MMD eyesight and psychometric tests.
- If all above tests are clear, you will have to pay Rs 28,100/- IGNOU fee to Training Ship Rahman.
- You will commence your training at Training Ship Rahaman on 1st August 2008.
NOTE
1. Candidates must meet all requirements of the company as well as those laid out by Director General of Shipping.
2. No candidate can appear more than once each year for the company's written exam.
3. The company's decision on selection will be binding and cannot be challenged.
4. Any false declaration or documents will result in the candidate being disqualified.

What happens after I pass out from the Pre-sea Institute?
- You will pass out in August 2009
- Thereafter you will be assigned on a company vessel as a deck cadet with a stipend of Rs 15000 approx
- You will be doing 9 month contract on board where you will undergo on-board training
- After 9 months you can proceed home on leave
- After 3 months leave (maximum) you will be assigned another vessel
- After completion of 18 months of seatime, you are eligible to appear for the Certificate of Competency Exam for Second Mate (FG)
- After passing your Competency exams you will join ship with an average salary of USD 2900 (Rs 116,000 approx)

Am I eligible ?
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA (as per Govt of India regulations)
Educational qualification:
3.1 10+2 with 55% marks in PCM aggregate or
3.2 50% marks in the final year of B.Sc. with physics in any of the years of B.Sc or
3.3 50% marks in the final year of B.E. or B. Tech. degree
AND
3.4 50% marks in English either at 10th or 12th or at graduation level.
Medical Requirement
All applicants shall comply with the physical and medical standards and MMD Eye sight related criteria as per M S Medical Examination (Medical Examination Rules 2000).
Age Requirement
Minimum Age requirement: Candidate should be 17 years of age as on 1st Aug 2008
Maximum Age limit:
For those passed 10+2 : 20 years of age as on 1st Aug 2008
For those passed Bsc : 22 years of age as on 1st Aug 2008

What is the MSC examination like ?
The MSC exam is a 1 ½ hour paper with the following:
English - 15 questions
Maths - 12 questions
Physics - 13 questions
General Knowledge - 10 questions
All questions are objective type multiple choice questions.

All candidates must apply and fill an application form for appearing for the OPENNET examination to be conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), scheduled on 15th June-2008 (Sunday) which will be held in various cities.
Open Net Examination:
The OPENNET shall have 180 questions distributed in six parts which are to be attempted in 3 hours. The University/DGS shall prescribe certain minimum qualifying marks in the OPENNET examination. These six parts are as follows:
English - 30 questions
General Knowledge - 30 questions
Reasoning Aptitude- 30 questions
Mathematics- 30 questions
Physics- 30 questions
Chemistry- 30 questions
Interaction with the prospective candidates
There shall be a live interaction with the prospective candidates on Gyan Darshan-2 (Teleconferencing channel of IGNOU) on 27th April 2008 (Sunday) 12:00 -13:45 PM. The channel is available on Doordarshan's Free DTH service and Zee's DishTV DTH (channel no. 1590). The candidate can ask their questions on Toll-Free no. 1800-11-2345. Capt. Uppal, Dy. Nautical Adviser to the Govt. of India, DGS, Capt. K.S. Varadkar and Project Coordinator of IGNOU shall be participating in the session from the Studios at New Delhi.
