FAQ ON THE MSC ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR DECK CADETS 2009

What is the selection Process ?

STEP 1

Note: Exam may not be held in any city having insufficient candidates. In that case applicants will be notified by e-mail and asked to appear in any other convenient city in above list

    1. Bring your 10th Marksheet for verification of date of birth
    2. Bring Photo Identity Proof
    3. Bring Rs 500/- as examination fees
    4. Bring a colour photograph for affixing on your answer paper.
    5. Bring pen for writing the exam.
  1. Interviews will be held immediately after the written exams.
  2. All successful candidates will be notified by mail/telephone

STEP 2

  1. Successful candidates will be called to any one of our centres for completing their medical tests through our Company doctor .(Medical tests are only to be done as per DGS Medical Examination Rules 2000 by a DG Shipping approved Company Doctor).
  2. Medical fees is Rs 2000 payable by candidate

Pls note details concerning IMU requirements below may be subject to change depending on the final decisions regarding same to be taken by Government bodies


STEP 3

  1. Download form A for IMU - last date for submission :29th May 2009)this is a Govt of India requirement.
  2. Exam fee is Rs 600 payable by candidate by Draft along with Form A – details as below:

Along with: Form A in an envelope super-scribed “Application form for B.Sc., Nautical Science”

Last Date: 29th May 2009.

WARNING:Incomplete Application Forms or those received after the due date will be summarily rejected and no enquiries will be entertained in this regard. The students are, therefore, advised to fill the relevant information carefully in the Application Form A for Entrance Test. Please see the checklist before sending the Application Form. The University will not accept any statement from the students about their ignorance in meeting these requirements.

  1. Appear for IMU entrance exam on 14th June 2009
  2. Results will be declared by end June/ early July 2009

STEP 4

  1. If you pass, we will call you for appearing for your MMD eyesight and psychometric tests.
  2. If all above tests are clear, you will be required to fill up form B for IMU additionally you must pay Rs 2,20,000/- fee by Demand Draft in favour of IMU payable at Chennai for the 1 year Pre-Sea Training.
  3. You will commence your training at a Government approved Pre-sea training Institute nominated by MSC.

NOTE

  1. Candidates must meet all requirements of the company as well as those laid out by IndianMaritimeUniversity / Director General of Shipping.
  2. No candidate can appear more than once each year for the company’s written exam.
  3. The company’s decision on selection will be binding and cannot be challenged.
  4. Any false declaration or documents will result in the candidate being disqualified.

What will it cost ?

  1. Cost of MSC entrance exam = Rs 500/-
  2. Cost of Medical Test = Rs 2000/-
  3. Cost of Psychometric Test= Rs700/-
  4. Cost of MMD Eyesight Test= Rs150/- approx
  5. Cost of IMU exam = Rs 600/- .
  6. Cost of 1 YearIMUPre-sea course = Rs 2,20,000

What happens after I pass out from the Pre-sea Institute

  1. You will pass out in July 2010
  2. Thereafter you will be assigned on a company vessel as a deck cadet with a stipend of Rs 17,500 approx
  3. You will be doing 9 month tenure on board where you will undergo on-board training
  4. After 9 months you can proceed home on leave
  5. After 3 months leave (maximum) you will be assigned another vessel
  6. After completion of 18 months of sea-time, you are eligible to appear for the Certificate of Competency Exam for Second Mate (FG)
  7. After passing your Competency exams you will join ship with an average salary of USD 3300 (Rs 168,000 approx)

Am I eligible ?

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA(as per Govt of India regulations)

Educational qualification:

10+2 with 55% marks in PCM aggregate or

50% marks in the final year of B.Sc. with physics in any of the years of B.Sc or

50% marks in the final year of B.E. or B. Tech. degree

AND

50% marks in English either at 10th or 12th or at graduation level.

Medical Requirement

All applicants shall comply with the physical and medical standards and MMD Eye sight related criteria as per M S Medical Examination (Medical Examination Rules 2000).

Age Requirement
Minimum Age requirement : candidate should be 17 years of age as on 1st Aug 2009

Maximum Age limit : 25 years of age as on 1st Aug 2009

What is the MSC examination like ?

The MSC exam is a 1 ˝ hour paper with the following

English – 15 questions

Maths – 12 questions

Physics – 13 questions

General Knowledge – 10 questions

All questions are objective type multiple choice questions

What is the IMU exam like ?

The IMU examination shall have 180 questions distributed in six parts which are to be attempted in 3 hours. These six parts are as follows:

English - 30 questions

General Knowledge - 30 questions

Reasoning Aptitude- 30 questions

Mathematics- 30 questions

Physics- 30 questions

Chemistry- 30 questions
